A handful of tissues in the human body — the eye, the brain, the testis, and the growing hair follicle — are what immunologists call immune-privileged. The rest of the body is under constant surveillance by immune cells that scan every cell's surface for anything unusual and destroy it if they find it. Privileged sites are exempt from that surveillance by design, because the tissue inside them is too specialized, too metabolically active, or too irreplaceable to survive the collateral damage of a normal immune response.

The follicle earns its privilege by hiding its identity.
